Vision 2023
Valuing the Future
“The year 2023 will be a period of rebuilding society, block by block. We have to shape the world based on new values, it is time for a masterplan. ”
Welcome to Vision 2023 by Oltmans van Niekerk, where we examine the changes in global cultural, technological, economic and social developments in 2023 and beyond. Globally, we are still living through a pandemic; however, there is light at the end of the tunnel as a result of rapid vaccine development. It will be 2025 before we have a historical view of the current pandemic. As a result of the current younger generation’s beliefs and values, we will begin to see fundamental societal changes. Will they be the generation that changed the world?
It is not just up to the younger generation to change the world; it is up to us all. We can do better for each other, our world, and future generations. The pandemic has clarified what is important to us.
Between the years 2020 and 2025, the year 2023 will be a period of rebuilding society, block by block. We have to shape a new world based on new values. It is time for a masterplan and action to ensure that fresh ideas are implemented.
2025 is a target year for many companies. We are now more aware of how little time we have to implement changes and create strategies. The year 2030 is set as a deadline to stem systemic climate change and that is already in sight.
For lasting impact, it is essential to activate change on every level. Commit yourself to equal rights and humane technology and create a more nuanced world to live in. Make the world better, smarter, cleaner and more equal.
Many of today’s problems were present before the pandemic, including a fear of the future. We have to learn to love the future again; see it as a new and exciting concept.
Four future directions
The challenges we face do not fit into neat criteria and are often interrelated, moving between politics, economics, culture and design. They require new ways of thinking and working.
1/ Nature First
The first driver of change is Nature First and the need for a closer, more humble connection to the planet to foster a society of real value, this will signify cultural and social changes that include our health and well-being, economic and environmental health.

2/ Empowerment
The second driver is Empowerment. Crises often expose structural inequalities; a crisis offers an opportunity to build better, stronger, more resilient and equal societies. Many face intersectional forms of discrimination that limit their access to economic rights. Tackling inequality requires a thorough overhaul of social policies and an honest investigation of racism and prejudice.

3/ Universal Healing
The third driver is Universal Healing. Humans have a unique ability to adapt and thrive. We need a breathing space to recover from everything we have been through. The increased need for mental wellbeing, human support, positivity, beauty and comfort will continue long after the Covid-19 virus outbreak. Well-being and happiness will be a higher priority for everyone in society.

4/ Decentralised World
The fourth and last driver is Decentralised World. The pandemic has shown how much can be achieved with technology, but we still live with the legacy of the Web 2.0 era. The transition to an internet of value requires us to own our data. Within the next two decades, technological advancements could revolutionise the Internet and create an environment that is both safe and empowering, one where an immersive virtual reality experience is a part of daily life.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
Albert Einstein
We hope to inspire you and help you define a clear direction with Vision 2023. The framework is clear, and the biggest challenges are defined as our new world’s shape is taking place. There is no choice; we have work to do. The pandemic has revealed the power of nature. Earth is a temporary home, be a responsible guest. Work to make the world a softer place by recognising softer values and emotions, live from the heart. We can do better!
